Concentrated solar projects are not abundant in the U.S. largely due to financing and water supply difficulties.  TAS Energy is reinvigorating an old market with its advanced design solar-to-power (S2P) organic rankine cycle unit.

 

COST ANALYSIS/ROI

Waste heat recovery on industrial and oil and gas processes provide a new source of electricity for use on-site or sale to the grid from a traditionally wasted resource. With a free fuel source, economics usually pencil out for most projects. Unfortunately with a complex electricity structure across the United State, economic projections do not come easy, and are not uniform across all territories.

On average, waste heat projects are worth considering in situations where the industrial facility is currently receiving power from their utility provider at 7 cents/kwhr or higher. Power cost is not the only determining factor as variables such as heat quantity, quality, and location are necessary to factor in, however it is a good starting point for initial consideration.

Conversely, projects on gas compressor stations, or other locations with no need for electricity on-site have an easier ‘return on investment’ analysis pending the ease of which a PPA can be secured from the receiving utility.
